Washington is in the middle of a serious heat wave, and if you are anything like my clients and neighbors, you are looking for ways to keep the family cool without retreating to the air conditioning for days on end.

The good news: the Puget Sound area is packed with ways to beat the heat. Here are some of the best family-friendly activities to stay cool while making the most of summer.

Get on the Water

Nothing cools you down faster than getting in or near the water, and the Puget Sound has no shortage of options.

Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish are go-to spots for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. If your kids are younger, the shallow beaches at Marymoor Park or Seward Park are perfect for wading and building sandcastles. Alki Beach in West Seattle gives you that classic beach day vibe: sand, waves, and ice cream within walking distance. For something more adventurous, consider renting a boat or joining a sailing lesson on Lake Union. The views of the city from the water are unbeatable, and the breeze off the lake feels incredible on a hot day.

Cool Off at a Splash Pad or Pool

When a full beach day is not in the cards, splash pads and public pools are lifesavers.

The City of Bellevue operates several spray parks and outdoor pools that are free or low-cost for residents. Crossroads Park and Bellevue Aquatic Center are family favorites. In Seattle, the wading pools at Green Lake, Volunteer Park, and Discovery Park stay packed during heat waves for good reason. Many community pools across the Eastside offer open swim hours. Check with your local parks department for schedules.

Hike to Waterfalls and Shaded Trails

If you want to stay active without baking in the sun, head for the trails that stay cool.

Rattlesnake Ledge near North Bend is a moderate hike with a stunning lake view at the top, and the trail stays mostly shaded. Wallace Falls near Index follows a river the entire way up, so you are never far from cool water. For something easier, the trails at Tiger Mountain or Discovery Park offer thick tree canopy and enough elevation change to catch a breeze. Pro tip: go early in the morning. Trails are cooler, less crowded, and the light is beautiful.

Grab Ice Cream or Frozen Treats

Sometimes the simplest plan is the best one.

Molly Moon's has locations across Seattle and the Eastside and is practically a summer institution. Top Pot Doughnuts is not just for coffee. Their cold drinks and pastries hit the spot on a hot afternoon. In Bothell, check out the local creameries and frozen yogurt shops downtown for a treat after an evening walk. Make it an adventure: let the kids pick a new spot every time, and you will have a summer list of favorites by August.

Indoor Escapes for the Hottest Days

When it is just too hot to be outside, the Puget Sound has you covered indoors too.

The Museum of Flight near Boeing Field is air-conditioned, fascinating for kids and adults, and you can easily spend half a day there. KidsQuest Children's Museum in Bellevue is built for younger kids and keeps them moving and learning while staying cool. The Woodland Park Zoo offers shaded areas and indoor exhibits that provide relief during peak heat. For older kids, try an escape room. Several locations across the Eastside and Seattle keep your brain busy while the AC does its work.

Evening Activities When the Sun Goes Down

Pacific Northwest summers have one big advantage: late sunsets and cool evenings.

Pack a picnic and head to a waterfront park for sunset watching. Discovery Park, Gas Works Park, and Marina Park in Kirkland all offer incredible views as the sun goes down. Attend an outdoor concert or movie in the park. Many Eastside cities host free summer series that start in the evening when temperatures drop. Take an after-dinner walk through your neighborhood. This is one of the best parts of living in the Puget Sound. Summer evenings here are hard to beat.

Stay Safe in the Heat

A few quick reminders while we are all trying to stay cool:

Hydrate constantly, especially with kids who forget to drink water when they are having fun. Check on elderly neighbors and family members. Heat waves can be dangerous for those who do not have adequate cooling. Never leave children or pets in a parked car. Even with windows cracked, temperatures rise to dangerous levels in minutes. Know the signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, and nausea are cues to get inside and cool down immediately.

Enjoying Summer in the Puget Sound

Heat waves remind us why we live here. The lakes, the trails, the beaches, and the community events all come alive during summer. Whether you are tubing on the Snoqualmie River, grabbing ice cream in downtown Bellevue, or just running through the sprinklers in your backyard, these are the moments that make Pacific Northwest summers worth every degree on the thermometer.
